About nephSAP

The Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (nephSAP®) is one of the premiere educational activities of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). nephSAP focuses on self-assessment, education, and providing Continuing Education (CE) credits and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points for individuals certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

nephSAP® provides a learning vehicle for physicians, scientists, advanced practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals working and training in the field of nephrology to renew and refresh their clinical knowledge, diagnostic, and therapeutic skills. This enduring material provides learners with challenging, clinically-oriented questions based on case vignettes, detailed learning objectives, a series of articles that review recent publications, and an editorial on an important and evolving topic. This combination of materials enables learners to rigorously assess their strengths and weaknesses in the broad domain of nephrology.

ASN seeks a new Deputy Editor for nephSAP

The Deputy Editor’s primary responsibility is to support the Editorial Director to extend nephSAP's quality, reputation, and scholarship, as well as enhance nephSAP's contribution to ASN continuing its mission "by educating health professionals and scientists, advancing research and innovation, communicating new knowledge, and advocating for the highest quality care for patients."

The Deputy Editor contributes to the development of each nephSAP issue to ensure its content, quality, and timeliness. The appointment term will commence March 2025 with a three-month orientation period and will end on December 31, 2027. Applicants must be ASN members in good standing and update their ASN disclosure at the time of submission.

Key responsibilities for the nephSAP Deputy Editor include, but may not be limited to:

  • Collaborating with the Editorial Director to ensure nephSAP complies with all appropriate ASN policies, especially those regarding bias and conflicts of interest for authors invited to write for nephSAP. Note that there may be separate disclosure and mitigation requirements for the accredited education components of this program.
  • Contributing to the development of each nephSAP issue to ensure content quality and timeliness of delivery.
  • Supporting the establishment of goals to ensure the content of nephSAP meets the highest standards of excellence and regularly evaluate nephSAP's performance in this regard.
  • Participating in weekly editorial team calls.
  • Reviewing assigned manuscripts/self-assessment questions in a timely manner.
  • Working closely with the ASN Staff in a professional manner to ensure challenges are addressed and best practices for accredited education and scholarly publishing are followed.
  • Providing additional input/performing additional tasks as requested.

This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, contribute to ASN and the broader nephrology community, collaborate with a dedicated team, and gain valuable expertise in academic editing and the formulation of ABIM-style questions. The Deputy Editor role offers a modest yearly stipend.
